Most TPMS sensors last about 5–10 years. The actual lifespan depends on the sensor chipset, how often it transmits data, battery capacity, and the vehicle’s daily driving time.

What determines how long TPMS sensors last?

TPMS sensors are sealed electronic devices installed inside a wheel. Their battery is not normally replaceable, so understanding the factors that affect battery life helps drivers and fleet operators plan replacement before a sensor stops reporting.

1. Automotive-grade chipset

The chipset controls pressure and temperature measurement, motion detection and radio transmission. Common automotive TPMS chip suppliers include Freescale, Infineon and NXP, alongside Chinese automotive-grade suppliers such as Senasic and Autochip. A low-power automotive-grade chipset supports stable operation in demanding vehicle environments and helps reduce battery consumption.

2. Sensor operating frequency

A TPMS sensor does not transmit at the same rate all the time. In a typical operating strategy, the sensor may transmit pressure data every 2 minutes while the vehicle is driving normally, every 8 seconds when an abnormal tyre-pressure condition is detected, and every 10 minutes while the vehicle is parked. More frequent transmissions consume more battery power.

3. Battery type and capacity

OEM TPMS sensors commonly use automotive-grade lithium coin cells such as CR2032 (210 mAh), CR2050 (320 mAh) and CR2450 (520 mAh). Batteries from established manufacturers such as Maxell, Panasonic and Sony are widely used in automotive applications. Battery capacity is important, but it works together with the sensor’s electronics and transmission strategy.

Typical TPMS sensor battery life

  • 4–6 hours of driving per day: approximately 5–7 years of service life.
  • Less than 3–4 hours of driving per day: a sensor may reach 7–10 years under suitable conditions.
  • More than 4 hours of driving per day: service life may be shorter, sometimes around 3–5 years depending on operating conditions.
